EPISODE 1: Where do you find your news/information?
In today's fast-paced world, the way we consume news has dramatically shifted. When I grew up, the main sources of news/information were The Herkimer Telegram, The Observer Dispatch, The Pennysaver, and WKTV's 6 o'clock news. Newspapers have gotten smaller (size-wise and subscription wise) and moved to mostly online subscriptions, and news channels are mostly broadcasting outdated news/information, or just putting their spin on it. The rise of cell phones, digital platforms, and social media apps has revolutionized how information is delivered and how we engage with it.
With so many apps, channels, websites, and social media apps to choose from, I often ask myself...Where do people get their news/information?
Let's take a look at some of the places I choose to look; along with the pros and cons of each.
Google News
You can access Google News by visiting: news.google.com or using the app on your phone. This is my first stop because it's a blend of Headlines, Local, U.S., World, Business, Technology, Entertainment, Sports, Science, and Health. Pro: It tracks your habits, and forms a 'For you' tab that lists articles based on your previous views and interests. Con: It has so many options that you could get bogged down, and reading articles for hours.
WKTV: News Channel 2
You can access WKTV by tuning to channel 2 on your television, through their app, or by viewing their social media pages. This is my second stop because WKTV is the staple for local news in the Mohawk Valley. Pro: I enjoy their coverage of local sports and local weather. Con: Outside of local sports and local weather, they are usually not the first to report on breaking news.
My Little Falls
Social Media
The popular platforms are Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. I have all three. I access news articles on Twitter. I search for WKTV and My Little Falls on Facebook. Instagram is where I get the perspective of my younger friends. Pro: It's a good mix of options, and I like to see people's comments. Cons: It's hard to distinguish between truth vs. opinion.
Finding Your Balance
With many different options available, it’s more important than ever to have a thoughtful approach. Each medium has its own strengths and weaknesses, and no single source can provide a complete picture of the world. It's like eating...we need a well-round, well-balanced diet of news/information sources.
So, where do you get your news?
